Mike Holmgren press conference wrapup
Posted by Frank Hughes @ 04:09:34 pm

More items from Holmgren's earlier meeting with the media:

Holmgren said the team is going to have to sign a couple more receivers to fill in for the latest round of injuries. He said a trade is a distinct possibility because "at some point you just keep looking at the same (free agent) names." He didn't sound enthusiastic about signing Samie Parker again, and he didn't give a ringing endorsement to Koren Robinson either. He insinuated they may have to sign/trade for players who have played here in the past because they have familiarity and can jump right into the system. Also, activating Jordan Kent from the practice squad is a possibility.

He said Sean Locklear is a possibility but that they have to see him practice this week before making a decision. He also was complimentary of Ray Willis, saying he is doing a good job. If I was to guess, I would say Locklear will not play by Holmgren's tone, but that is a wait-and-see situation.

Holmgren chose to take the optimistic view, saying that even with all the things that have gone wrong, they still were within a field goal of winning the game. He said he is confident they can turn it around because they are getting guys like Branch and Engram back hopefully after the bye week and if they can hang on until then they have a shot. He said it is WAY too early to look at the big picture -- as in, they would need to win 12 of their next 14 to have a realistic hope of home-field advantage through the playoffs.

Holmgren mentioned John Carlson as a bright spot, saying he has emerged as one of the weapons for Matt Hasselbeck. Holmgren said one of the key things to look at in how the receiver mess is affecting Hasselbeck is that his completion percentage is less than 50 when it is normally around 65. Holmgren also said the offensive line was a positive thing.

Holmgren was diplomatic but clearly did not agree with the officials' call on the Kelly Jennings PI call in the end zone. He said he didn't even see contact. Jennings however said he can see why the refs made the call. He said he probably got too physical with the receiver and forced the ref to throw a flag.
