With Miles Austin out four to six weeks with a knee injury, several young Cowboys receivers have another chance to show the coaching staff they belong on the 53-man roster.

Austin sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee on a kickoff Saturday against the Broncos. He had just caught a 5-yard touchdown pass. Austin could return before the game at Green Bay on Sept. 21.

"He's had a tremendous camp this year," backup quarterback Brad Johnson said. "You hate to see him get injured. He's really improved and [it's been] fun to watch him make plays."

Austin's absence opens the door for Isaiah Stanback, Mike Jefferson, Danny Amendola and even Todd Lowber, who was signed soon after training camp started.

"It's another game under the belt, some more experience, and that's what we need," Amendola said.

Attitude not a problem: Tank Johnson said it's unfair to say the Cowboys had an easy training camp. After being in California and Colorado for more than three weeks, the players were ready to come home and recharge their batteries.

The Cowboys won't leave home until the season opener. The team will host an open practice at Texas Stadium from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Stadium gates open at 4:30 p.m. The final two preseason games are at home, too.

"I feel like I've been on a tour with a rock band," Johnson said. "I'm just ready to get back home, get back in my bed and get in a regular routine for this season."

A. Jones helps with giveaway: Cornerback Adam Jones joined Deion Sanders at the Charity Church in Fort Worth to help give away 1,500 backpacks loaded with school supplies and sign autographs for the recipients.

Jones acknowledged that such appearances are good for his image, but he spent his first day off since training camp started to help needy children, not improve his chances to be fully reinstated by the NFL.

Spencer to return: Linebacker Anthony Spencer, who missed the Broncos game with a right knee injury, said he hopes to return this week. The Cowboys will resume practice Tuesday.

Also, linebacker Justin Rogers said he injured the AC joint in his left shoulder during Saturday's game. It's the same shoulder he injured last year. The former SMU standout said he didn't think it was serious, though.
